Chickadee 02:57
In the Wind, Oh I die and the sparkle in your eye Oh, it humbles my weary side You thought you had a throne and crown but your hot rain burned it down Oh, woah it crumbles the whole damn town Like the song of the Chickadee, There's a note for you and me no feather, rock or tree Could know the hustle Cold rain had you shivering Dandelion in the spring In the wind, they blossom and blow to sea

Compartment 03:25
Summer come with ache in the belly, and crawling on my skin Feeling heavy Get together and go away, lighten up your new case, you will find less in your way On up accelerate, slow down honey, break for you and I Anyway, it's getting late Chorus: Rise on up another day, bring a new, put a way Things on the floor an apartment What made you so red in the face, dig around search the place May be in some other compartment Steady as the old highway, and the tremble of what I say Now, who's to blame? Broke down on old highway Coming up from deep below, it's been fermenting and the bottle was bound to blow But, now we know Rise on up another day, bring a new, put a way Things on the floor an apartment What made you so red in the face, dig around search the place May be in some other compartment

You Choose 03:13
Back to little kid again, crumpled in a ball Learn to hold in or, spew it all on the floor Down to fumes, now your dousing out the room Spacing out and soon, there are you in your tomb Was it the day, maybe the season? Double thought triple reason You Choose, You Choose Come to me, ice walker on a pond, Stability, thin ground you're on Don't look down tell it true for the better On the wall, my mind's projector A filter on, dusty and tethers to Sky blue, see a new Was it the day, maybe the season? Double thought triple reason You Choose, You Choose, You Choose, You Choose

about

"You Choose" was recorded at Indidog studio, which is in an A-frame home up Reams creek near Weaverville, NC. My dear friends Billy Cardine and Mary Lucy offered for me to housesit in this house for them that August 2021 while they were gone, so I figured it would be a great time to move to North Carolina from Colorado, which I was already intending on doing.

I had written a couple of songs from that spring and summer, and had a few simple banjo melodies mind. After taking a week to arrive in this new place and to soak up the beautiful Pisgah national forest, I started testing microphones and checking tones.

I recorded most elements of the EP during that August, taking my time. I did a lot of experimenting, because time was in wondrous surplus. I tinkered with it into the fall, having a couple friends like Lyle de Vitry (cello on "Compartment") and Nick Faulk (drums on "The World is Burning") add to the project.

I asked Joe Dejarnette (aka Joe Bass) of Studio 808a in Floyd, VA if he would mix what I had recorded. He is a big sound engineering mentor for me, and I was delighted he agreed to jump on. Joe surprised me by adding electric bass and delay effects to a "Compartment" and "Till 5", and it was such a delight to receive new mixes in my inbox that winter.

Anna Frick at Ally Sound in Longmont, CO mastered the record, which means she optimizes the music for listening platforms, and does subtle things to the songs to make them all sound good relative to each other. I took mixing and mastering lessons from both Joe and Anna in the depths of the pandemic via zoom, and I thought it was really neat to be able to have them work on what I had engineered myself.

It wasn't until the next summer of '22 that my friend Rita Kovtun and I met out at an old school in Marshall, NC- now known as Marshall High Studios. I had seen her photography work and knew I wanted to have this EP include an image of myself in some way. She took a roll of film photos of me, many of them as double exposures. This causes the capturing of two images to be superimposed on eachother, and a few of these photos album artwork for the EP, and for the two singles I released leading up to it.

The title of the EP comes from the chorus of the last song- a repeated sort of mantra claiming that we are the deciders of our own happiness.
